Camping: Good Thing Its Free

20 Jul

We want to make the most of this fleeting summer so we headed north to Crane Lake to get in some family camping time.  People drive from all over the country to camp and enjoy this untouched part of nature and we only have to drive 40 minutes.  We have everything loaded up in the boat and the kids are ready and rearing to go.  We hop out of the car and Jared launches the boat.

Jared is leading the boat over to the dock when a part of the cement retaining wall collapses and Jared falls into the water while flinging his wallet into the lake.  No big deal, just reach down and grab it, right.  Nope.  Not exactly.  He reaches down and cannot feel it anywhere.  He searches for about 20 minutes and then he takes over kid duty while I search the iron rich depths.  Nope, nowhere to be found.

How in TARNATION can a wallet disapear that fast?  Just so you know a leather fossil wallet feels a lot like the bottom of Crane Lake.  After searching for close to two hours we decided to cancel the credit cards and head on our journey, the girls were happy to be finally heading out.

Fortunately he had no cash in the wallet (he had just spent his last $4 on fishing bait) unfortunately we have no credit cards at the moment and Jared’s really nice Fossil wallet is gone =( Sad, sad day.  Oh yeah and the worst part… he has to go to the DMV to get a new driver’s license- arg.

It is a good think that camping and these views are free.

A Chicken for Every Kid

25 Apr

If I run for president someday perhaps my slogan will be, “A Chicken For Every Kid.”  (kinda like the 1928 slogan of Herbert Hoover of “A Chicken in Every Pot”)  Maybe not.  But seriously I LOVE having chickens and they are so so good for kids.  I will tell you why every kid needs a chicken or two:

1.  They are fun to have around.  A constant source of fun right outside your front door

2.  Chickens teach responsibility.  If you don’t check the coup a few times a day, the eggs will get cracked or eaten.  And a couple times a week they need new water and feed.

3.  Chasing chickens is a great workout, running around the yard trying to catch your favorite hen is quite tiresome and exciting.

4.  Chickens are entertaining, whether the kids are chasing them or they are just pecking around the yard they are fun to watch.  Hudson often stands at the window making squawking sounds as the chickens scratch around in the yard.

5. Chickens are hearty, I am in no way worried about the kids hurting the chickens.  They can wrangle them and rough around with them and the hens will be just fine- beside maybe not laying for a day or two

6. Chickens are fun to name, we currently have 13 hens,3 old ladies who are destined for the pot– Spider, Fluffy, Ellen, 3 banties- Merida, Fancy, Spike. And seven others, Torrealba, Pecker, Cindy Lou Who, Star, Cardinal, Raccoony, and Chick Chick.

7.  They are photogenic, the kids are proud when they catch a chicken so they are more inclined to smile for a cute picture

8.  Chicken eggs are delicious, homegrown hen eggs are one of the most delicious thing you can possibly eat, what better way for a kid to start their day then a golden orange scrambled egg?  This is the most we have ever had!

So there, get some chickens, and vote me for president while you are at it =)

A Reader’s Gymnastics Bar

7 Jan

The gymnastics bar posts are by FAR the most googled and looked at posts we have on this blog.  Quite interesting.  I love that families out there are not settling to spend $500 on a store gymnastics bar but are instead building them.    Way to go!

One such industrious family sent a picture of this gymnastics bar they built for their daughter.  They gave it to her as a Christmas present and as you can guess, it was a huge success.  Look at the gorgeous paint job!  Can you imagine the look on her face as she sees this masterpiece on Christmas morning?

I am so happy that this friendly reader took the time to send this picture, it sure made my day. Thanks!
